Jim Hill looked out his window. He had heard of utopia’s but he wondered whether or not they existed.
The streets were rank with crime. Day in and day out looters and pillagers ran the streets. Government had broken down, and it was a free-for-all grab-or-miss anything you wanted.
Across the street much of the looting had died down. It was a residential district mostly, and no one lived in the burned, hollowed out ridge.
Every day in a dystopian society was a little bit hecktic. But today was a little worse than most- he needed food. And badly.

Infinite discovery part 90

Trent couldn't believe their luck. These clumsy suckers were almost tripping onto their own spears. In fact, he thought he saw one of them do just that.
"Haha, these guys are pretty stupid eh Torn?"
Torn was having something of the same - relief at the thought that they had run into minor resistance. "Yeah, like shooting peas in a pod."
Tomlin was greatful as well. Still, he knew that not all was well. Whoever shot them down might be smart enough to hire mercs to take them on. If so, they wouldn't last.

Barbara had a good look, her eyes being better than most. She spied them and let know what she thought. "There's five of them, average men and well armed. I'm going to see what they are up to. You all wait here."

From a mile away they could see them; savages of some sort, though they were armed and deadly.
Trent was having a merry time of it. Torn looked anxious but raring for a fight. "Let's get this done."
In the ship itself Molly was trying to help Mistivia focus. Chris put his hormones aside and asked the obvious, "What are you doing?"

Infinite discovery part 88

As soon as they were back to their room Molly turned to her. "Mistivia is it? Quite the odd name."
A second passed. Chris looked from one to another. Suddenly the girl looked shocked. "Of course he knows." Molly told her. "He saved me."
"I see." Despite himself, Chris thought her accent was hot. He caught himself and looked to Molly. "Haha. You two are... I see."
"Eh?" Chris said confused.
Molly explained. "She's a psychic, a powerful one. And don't worry Chris, I've dated and read the minds of many men."
Chris looked away slightly bemused. Mistivia eyed him with more than her eyes. "He is a good one. I see why you trust him."
"Right, but we have more pressing matters." Molly said, suddenly looking determined.

"Why?" She asked, acting coy.
"Just do it." Molly said irritatedly. At the concern on both their faces the ladies started to get the idea. Jack was with her trying to round up all the women they could.
"Hey Chris, what gives eh? We could use this time to let off some steam."
"Yeah. Nothing like women to soften the blow."
His comrades were jovial as could be. Chris fought the urge to be serious with them and cracked a smile on his face. "Oh you know. They can't handle what's to come."
His friends all nodded. Chris had a great poker face Molly thought. Still, she was quite happy for it.
"Excuse me." One of the girls said. She looked like something out of a biker's dream. "Could I stay with you? I'm scared."
Several of the guys grinned. Molly at first thought Chris was getting unduly attention but then something about her caught Molly's eye.
"Uh, that's ok miss. You'll be safe in the back."
Quite unexpectedly to Chris Molly came forward. "Oh I don't know, I think you can defend us both."
"All hail the lady killer! Didn't know you had it in you Chris." The men hooted and hollered. Though Chris put on a front for his mates he brought a look to Molly. Molly didn't turn her head but looked to the door back to their room, her face issuing the sameness as before.

Tomlin woke up with a head wound. His men were laying about, some dead, others wounded.
"Son of a biscuit eating bulldog. I take it we've landed?"
"Crash landed." Torn told him. Trent was shaken but wouldn't let it show. The rest hauled their butts up, some with utter pain though they too wouldn't it be known.
"Son of a bitch! That's the worst landing I've had to go through. Torn, Trent, get a pair of teams together and help the wounded. I'll see what I can salvage from the ship."

Chris was more than a little worried. He couldn't find her for the longest time. He then entered what was once their bathroom and there she was looking a little worse for wear.
The expression on her face was something he recalled seeing before. She rubbed her hands together and looked to him. She reached out to him telepathically and he knew as well as she did. The real battle was coming.

Sanders and his men spoke confidentially in their own tongue around a campfire. Other fires were lit all around them.
"What do you make of him?"
Sanders left off peeling an orange to look at him. The way he said it indicated he did not enjoy Toque's presence. "Don't worry about him. He will be dealt with."
"By who? You?"
"He will go away, once he is given what he came here for." Sanders took a bite.
"Hmph. Tea leaves, a little plant. What good will this do us?"
"Patience." Sanders grunted. He ate some more before responding. "You like gold don't you?"
Most of his men snickered at this. "This is how we take gold from them. They will pay gold for a plant; they are stupid."
"I say we take their gold, not grow some worthless plant." He scowled.
Sanders fixed his eyes on him through his mouthfuls. "Sure, if you want to fight the trained guards with metal lances be my guest. This way we get all the gold we want for nothing."
His men could see the logic in him. The one who spoke was still not convinced of everything. "What if he comes back? What then?"
"We give him what he wants and he'll leave. Or else."

Sirens sounded. The ship rocked. Molly fell back on instincts while Chris desperately reached for the com. "Tomlin, what's going on?"
Crackle and then silence. Desperate Chris turned to Molly. She started to verbalize her thoughts.
"Panic, much panic from the bridge... most everyone else is gleeful at the opportunity to fight. Tomlin is ordering them to 341 mark 278, into the planet."
Molly projected her fear to him. He got the message.

"You two better not turn chicken shit again on me."
"What? You think we're chicken shit? Up yours old man." Trent told him. Torn being older, let some beleaguered pride show though he said nothing.
"Good. I want you two to take up the reigns when we enter orbit. I know you won't disappointment me."

Molly looked to him as though he were rotting lettuce. "I don't want to talk about it." She stated.
"Hey sorry." Chris came back.
Molly put down her sandwich. She got up and headed for the bathroom. From Chris's vantage point he saw her turn on the faucets and rinse off her face. By use of her unknown powers she could tell what was going through his mind. Suddenly it changed and she looked to him. He smiled mischievously. "Remember what I said?"
A smile played across her face. Inwardly she was thankful, even if. "Et tu Chris?"
Chris raised his hands. "Hey, I'm just a poor boy from the slums. Don't blame me."
"Just kidding." She told him, moving to do his unspoken will.

"How much?" The other inquired. He rubbed his thumb and fingers together.
"A very hefty pile. I say we chase him and collect on the bounty."
"Sounds good. Let's get to it."
Marie let them them pass without seeing her. Wordlessly she got back to work.

"Hmm?" She said looking behind her.
"Something's going on. They are very nervous."
Molly sent her mind out. It briefly touched his and she grinned. From there she touched base with the bridge and discovered something not so pleasant. In the blink of an eye her once good humor turned to dust.
"What's wrong?" Chris asked.
She brushed past him, still half dressed.

"Are you out of your minds!?"
The bridge crew jumped. Everyone turned back to see her, a half-dressed woman with her hand slammed on the console staring angrily at the three men at the 3D map.
"Who the hell is she?" Torn replied angrily.
"It's only Chris's woman, don't mind her." Trent said
Molly had played her cards right. She had entered when they were pointing to the planet she knew they were heading to and looked right to them so she knew they'd have no idea. "You are not planning on going to Terra Nock are you?"
"Get out. No one invited you." Torn shouted at her.
Chris came in during the shouting match.
"...and lastly your out of your God forsaken minds! We'll die like dogs!"

"You blasted wench!" Torn shouted advancing on her. Molly began to back off when Tomlin raised his hand. Chris had moved up behind Molly wondering what had caused so much outrage.
"What you don't know young miss is that we have no choice. It is not how we wish to go about but there is little choice."
Molly knew he was telling the truth. Angrily she stormed out. Chris looked bewildered but said nothing.

Barbara overslept.
She woke up with a start. She had had some kind of bad dream. Looking around most of her men were up making lunch as breakfast had long past. Two of them were having it out in the corner and Barbara supposed she could guess why.
"Shut'up you ingrate. It's my deer! You only helped."
"Huh, if I never made those arrows you would never have been able to kill it."
"What's your point? I still killed it. Without me there wouldn't be no dear. You couldn't hit the broadside of a barn!"
Barbara raised her voice easily higher than them. "Enough!"
Both stopped their wrestling and looked to her. "You know the rules. Share the dang meat."
Reluctantly the bigger one handed over a slice. "Yes ma'am."
Just then Steve came running through the door. "Barbara, you ought to come see this."

Marie was nobodies fool. She watched Toque go with that look on his face. She could only guess where he was off to. In the twinkling of an eye he was off through the underbrush on the side of town.
Marie went to give chase but bumped into someone. "Oh excuse me."
Marie glimpsed him, thinking he looked familiar. "You, your the one with Vince aren't you?"
"Yes, er, was with him. Sarganno's the name."
"Right. Want to earn a few coins?"
Sarganno looked around nervously. "What do I have to do?"
"There's a fat man who took off into the forest yonder. I want to know what he's up to. Find out and there will be a fat sack of gold for you."
"... ok. What's your name?"
"Marie Ollon. I work at this restaurant, and you can find me here."
"Right, off I go then."
Sarganno took off through the underbrush where the fat man had disappeared earlier. Marie thought it strange he never asked for an amount.
"He was back here I'm sure of it."
Two knights came back to where she was. They looked around but otherwise ignored her.
"Huh... maybe he circled around back?"
"Let's go."
Both went running. Marie cocked an eyebrow. Had she just consorted with a criminal?

Infinite discovery part 79

Chris wandered out and around the ship. He peeped into what he though was an unused room only to find some "happenings" of ill repute. He closed the door quickly.
Thinking back he could not remember ever being on the bridge. Slowly he made his way. When he arrived he met Trent and Tomlin there.
"... its here, and here. The rebel factions were fighting it out after the fall. I don't know if any got the upper hand. Last I knew it was chaos."
Tomlin cut Torn off. "Chris, good to see you. What brings you up here?"
Chris gave him a passing glance while looking around. "Just viewing the ship."
Tomlin nodded. He and Torn looked to each other.
Chris pretended not to notice. He left soon after.

Sarganno stared out the window of a local inn. It called for rain, he could see it in the sky. Vince had left him behind with some of his coin. Sarganno didn't really know what to do with himself. He supposed work would have to be sought for the time being.
Looking down, the hustle and bustle of the city could be seen clearly. Wagons came and went through the town. Dealers hawked goods at the local marts which could be clearly seen from his window. Stores at the other end of the street, farther down, opened for business.
Sarganno's gaze looked down below, closer to where he was. The hairs raised on his nape. Two guards stood there, questioning men in the street. They pointed to the inn he stayed at.
Sarganno hurried to leave.

Chris woke up the next day feeling like he had a concussion. The previous day was not all that great to him. Molly had her head on his chest. The way he looked at her left nothing to question. He lay his head back and waited until she woke up.

"Are we clear?" Tomlin said.
An engineer had come up to make his report. "Looks as though we are. Most systems are damaged in some way but we are still able to move."
Trent grunted. "I don't like this. We're sitting ducks."
"If most systems are damaged then they'll be on stand by. We should be able to run silently then." Tomlin told him.
Torn was also close by. His grin hadn't left his face. "I'm up for another fight, alien or otherwise."
Trent did not return his grin this time. He said nothing.
"I'll be down in the mess all if you need me." Torn told them. He left.

Toque finished off the last of his burgers. He flipped one onto a plate and handed it off before removing his apron. "All right bucko, it's yours. Have fun." He said to the oncoming cook.
Toque exited out the back. Night was beginning to fall. Considering his new appropriation he didn't feel like sleeping. Toque wondered off into the woods. He knew where he was going, and that was good enough for him.
For once things were turning around.

His son looked over at them cautiously. Steve kept it in what he supposed. If they were with Barbara they shouldn't have been a bad lot.
"No but Barbara's an old friend of ours. Don't worry son, I'm sure they aren't bad men."
Nancy sat at the edge of the small field looking at the rough and tumble group nervously. "Steve... Steve where are we going to sleep?"
Steve looked up to her momentarily. "Under the stars of course. Don't worry, if things get bad they'll protect us.
"Tomorrow we'll work on expanding this field, right boys?"
Both his sons acknowledged.
From back at the house shouting could be heard. A fight had broken out between two of Barbara's men. She didn't care in the least; it helped to past the time and see which of her men was the toughest of the bunch. She watch as, like any boxing match, two men went toe to toe.
"Kick his bloody ass!"
"Fuck him up! I want to see teeth flying."
"I got too much riding on this! You better win."
And more colorful banter flew. Barbara was used to it. Men will be men after all.
A right hook connected and the other went down for the count. The men cheered, others cursed wildly. Money was tossed back and forth as bets were lost. After everything was said and done most departed for a corner to sleep in.
Barbara knew better. Even so, she took off much of her outer layer clothing. Nearly every man's eye caught her that was present. She smirked; it had been a long time again. Boys will be boys.
"Hey boss, you want the couch?"
Wordlessly she wandered over to him. She laid down where he had been a moment before. A moment passed and a blanket was laid over the top of her. She smiled but said nothing. Even brutes had a gentlemanly side to them.

Infinite discovery part 77

Tomlin's ship sped off into the distance, all of her crew now aboard. The twin alien ships that had been attacking hung glumly in space. Time past in slow motion. The aliens aboard either ship had no idea what was going on, right up to the end. A pair of explosions rocked the space around them, including Tomlin's ship.
"Aaargh." He yelled aloud.
The concussion waves hit the ship tossing it forward through space. Gravity was lost temporarily. Food and other things waved through the ship.
"Looks like it was bigger than what we thought. Woops." Torn grinned wolfishly. Trent had a severe look on his face but said nothing.
"What's the matter young'un? You some kind of pansy?" Torn looked to him.
Trent finally grinned. "No but I don't like the thought of dieing."
"Neither do I." Torn told him.

"Are the depth charges in place?"
"Aye sir, they are on the reactors themselves. It was some fun blowing up these alien scum."
Tomlin grinned back at the ship. He hit a button on his communicator. "Trent are you and your boys set up?"
"Aye sir. We are good to go."
Tomlin nodded a few times. "Then you boys get your butts back here. Let those aliens find their surprise."

"Our benefactor wishes to remain anonymous. Do we have a deal?"
"Certainly." Matthew told him.
He nodded. "I'll get my boys to bring it out here at once."

The aliens muttered to each other in their own tongue. The one with a captains hat looked pleased with himself. Another seemingly unarmed carrier. Little did he realize what they have in store.
He gave the command to halt the assault and then it happened; Eight men holding energy weapons appeared out of thin air in front of him. In a single slew of charges his bridge crew was annihilated.
"Merry fucking Christmas." Torn told him as he blasted him to oblivion.

Molly returned to her private room with Chris. As she walked along prior she had felt a nervous tension through the ship. Some were laughing and having a merry old time. Others... were dreading something. What she did not dare look into. Something told her it would not be good.
Besides... he wanted her to stop using her gift.
Walking in she found him fast asleep. She stripped naked and climbed in beside him.

Chris laid down next to her. This was his favorite part of the day. He wrapped his arm around her as she seemingly stared off into nothing. He knew that look well. He nudged her out of it. "Like I said, you really shouldn't rely on it that much."

"Torn, my good lad, where have you been?" Tomlin was warming up to his old, if younger, friend. Torn spared no details but grinned and winked.
Tomlin had gotten old. In his younger days he would have put on a sly grin and winked back. Now he smiled, averted his eyes and drew up a virtual map of the sector. "We are here. Do you know where we can find a spare place for supplies that is close?"
Torn took a good look at the map. He whistled. "Can't we go farther than this?"
"Fuel supplies are low so I'm afraid not."
Torn gulped visibly. "Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Right here. Thought I'd never return to that hell again..."

Matthew sat back and reaped the rewards of his tea. He drank a cup himself, not restricting it to the upper class only.
A knock came at his door in his long office. "Come in." He yelled in between sips.
Looking rather sheepish Toque came in. "Yes sir?"
"I wanted to let you know I'll be extending you debt cap to get you out of trouble. How much is it?"
"With all due respect sir, I have taken this debt upon myself. Wouldn't feel right having you pay it back."
Matthew leaned forward, a severe look dawned on his face. He let the moment hang in the air making Toque feel even more uncomfortable. "You borrowed with some shady characters Mr. Wilson. You work here putting everyone at risk to pay down the debt you already owe, thus you put everyone here at risk. I'll not allow it. I want to see your loan 'officer' or whatever you call him to pay back the debt."
Toque knew his back was to a wall. He let slip who it was. Matthew nearly lost it when he heard who the benefactor was.

Chris looked around on some of the upper decks. Finally he found what he was looking for. It had been a long time.
"Heh, pikman... and it's free! Nice."
Chris stood there in front of an arcade machine for what felt like a brief time for him. In reality some time had passed.
"Hey what are you doing?"
It was one of the 'entertainers'. Chris looked her way briefly before getting back to his game. "It's called Pikman. Little men duke it out to the death. Want to try?"
Slowly she took the bait and meandered his way. As it turned out she was better than what he thought.

Torn took the huge cigar from his mouth. He took another shot of tequila before replying. "Whooaaa. That hits the spot. Haven't seen him since he boarded. Don't know why you care. I bet your glad you never have to see that prison again huh?"

Torn took a cigarette pack from inside his coat and passed it to him. "Go ahead, there's plenty more where they came from."

Vince enjoyed the peace of the moment. He knew it wouldn't last. Any moment his brother would arrive and they'd be off gallivanting to his awards show. This was the last thing he wanted but what he knew he ultimately had to do. Life throws you one to many curve balls, he decided.

Inside their room Chris had to admit he was a bit eager to get out to be with the rest of the guys. Molly wasn't so keen on it however.
"Oh come on Molly..." Chris began. She knew where he was leading.
"If your refering to my job well I had to."
"Couldn't your friends have helped you get better work?"
Molly sighed. "We are suppose to be self sufficient. And anyway please don't go where they go."

Trent and the other guys walked onto the boarding platform of their new ship. Most hooted and hollered like no tomorrow. Trent came up and grasped old Tomlin by the arm. "Good to see you... Captain."
"Aye good to see you too. Though you can just simply call me Captain."
From inside Torn could be heard somewhere down the deeps. "Look what we got boys! Strippers!"

Trent sat there stewing over his luck. How was he going to get out of this one?
"Officer, officer!" One of his guys bemoaned. "I need a cig, you got any?"
"No cigarettes." The officer said.
Trent could feel the nicotine withdraws himself. Finally some relief came in sight.
"Somebody made bail, your free to go." Said a female officer.

Torn lit a cigarette and took a long draw. He had related his tail in full, about being captured, taken and freeing himself as well as the guys.
"...So what do you plan on doing?" Molly asked.
Torn looked at her for a second before answering. "Well we have a ship, but no means of income. Old Tomlin's been named Captain. He says we need to find a financial backer - and fast."
"Can we come with you?"
Chris and Torn looked to Molly.
"I'm not sure you know what your getting into miss." Torn said, taking another drag. "These men... they ain't exactly gentlemen."

Chris opened the door cautiously. Had he known who was behind it he would have thrown the doors open.
"Torn?"
With a lit cigarette in his unshaven mouth Torn smiled broadly. "You thought I was dead didn't yah? Hah!"
Chris clapped his hand and brought him close like he would a brother. "Good to see you Torn."
"Aye, that it is. Whiskey?"
"No thanks. Torn this is Molly."
Molly had a pleasant look on her face. She shook his hand and bowed slightly. "A pretty one. You look just as good as you did back at the bar."
"So, how did you survive?"

Sarganno was next to him reading out of a paper. "Huh, that blockhead finally got arrested huh? Ha! I'd like to see the look on his face when they caught him."
Vince ignored him and stared out the window. It had been a long time.
Then Matt came upstairs. He observed Vince and Sarganno and carried his tray over. "Thanks to you two I'll be having fresh tea for a while. Here, have some."
"Uncle, this isn't -"
"Nevermind, drink up. You've earned it."
Sarganno was next to him reading out of a paper. "Huh, that blockhead finally got arrested huh? Ha! I'd like to see the look on his face when they caught him."

"Just calm down all right." Molly was saying. "It will be ok. We'll make bail for them or something."
"And how do you purpose we do that?"
Molly looked back at him and shrugged. Chris could tell his anger was getting the better of him, and apparently so did Molly. He relaxed.
"This stroke of luck and now it's been dashed."
Then a knock came at the door.

"More tea? These nobles pay out the nose for tea! Why in the world would they want more at that price?"
Toque looked confused. A passing servant commented "It's because of the drought sir. The crops have not gotten all that they need so a famine has taken much of the land. Fields normally reserved for tea leaves went to other foods."
"Hrmph." Toque went on with his duties. "If I had a quarter of their wealth..."
