"Chris?"

He snapped back to the present. What he had been fingering in his hand he slipped back into his pocket.

"Yeah?" Chris turned around real quick, startled.

The elderly, one eyed man stayed staring at him in his room a moment longer. "Me and the boys are going out tonight. You coming?"

"Yeah."

The man whose name he had forgotten again left. he pulled the ring from his pocket. It had been four long years...

Reboot; Vince Vaan part 7

"Here you go boss. He's agreed to take us on the cheap." Toque said to Vince.

Vince turned to Marie. "Are you coming as well?"

Marie shrugged. "I suppose."

Vince turned to the driver. "She's coming with us."

"That'll be extra."

Vince handed him a set amount. The driver quietly accepted it gratefully. All three got on board and they were off at a brisk pace.

Marie was curious. "Say, what was in the letter that your uncle sent you?"

"He needs something. A different kind of labor..."

By the look on his face she could tell it may be just that kind of work.

Bad news I'm afraid.

Myspace.com, the original location of "Infinite Discovery" has been taken down. I'm afraid I'll have to rewrite it all from scratch...

Nuts. Thank you for watching though, I promise I'll try to make it worth your while :).

"Happy eighteenth birthday Chris." "Happy birthday myboy."

Eighteen years old. Manhood. It had come early, earlier than he had expected. Much of his youth was now behind him. He was too old to expect presents at this late date. His real present came this year however. His sister was back to her old self.

"Happy birthday brother." To his surprise she handed him a present. Family looked to one another, knowing how close they had become in the years past. "Well, open it." She insisted.

For the first time in years he had something to genuinely smile about. He turned his attention back to his present.

knock knock knock

"Well who in the world could that be?" Their mother asked.

Chris wouldn't ever forget that night, even as things went to hell.

"Oh my word!" Their mother exclaimed Molly and Chris had made eye contact briefly. Wordlessly Molly slowly made her way to the back door

"No need to worry. We're here to question - STOP!" Molly made a break for it. Their father charged them. "You aren't taking her!" Chris watched as his world ripped apart. His father was the first, his uncle second with twin blasts. Another of the armed men restricted him. As he watched he managed to glimpse her in their yard running full on before he was knocked out.

Don't worry sis, I'll come for you. I promise.

Reboot; Vince Vaan part 6

Vince stepped outside and confronted the small crowd silently. "We know Vince is in there."

They said. "We want him. He owes us." "How much?" Vince said. This jolted the crowd and for a moment they were silent.

Toque waited nervously. Marie rolled her eyes at him. "What kind of man are you?"

"A smart one." He replied. "Investors do not like their money being taken from them. I think I'll escape out the back."

Before he ever could Vince came back through the door. Toque looked out the window to the departing crowd. "I owe you a great deal young one. Want can I do for you?"

Vince glanced his way. He then said calmly "Let's go."

Marie was shocked. "You'd pay his debts for him?" Vince would only look at her. He carried on. Marie was impressed. He was no brigand. Better to be in debt with a righteous man I suppose. Toque thought to himself.

Six years ago
She had been having horrible nightmares.

Chris knew of the extent psychics had their own battles within. He was there for his sister every step of the way. She grew more socially inept as time progressed. Her mood, her attitude screamed one of vindictiveness, one of maliciousness. Her hate was becoming palpable.

"Molly?" Her friends asked her one day.

"Oh she suffers from tourets syndrome."

"Oh..."

Her brother steered her around the corner and they were alone again.

"Sis, you have to calm down."

"Ugh... what?"

Her face, which had been a murderous mix of bug-eyes and stone cold placidness, snapped back to regular her. She blinked a few times then looked to him.

"I did it again didn't I?..."

She had returned to her once natural self. For the moment. Chris knew this sort of thing happened in a psychics adolescence and that she would grow out of it.

"Hey, head to class ok? We'll talk later."

"Yeah, right. Thanks big brother."

Her good humor would not last.

Reboot; Vince Vaan part 5

Toque was beside himself. "That's all you got for your home? Pish tish. I could have gotten you far more."

"It'll do nicely for what I plan to use it for. After all, it's not a home in Costa Del Sol or anything."

Marie wasn't sure of any of this but something about him, there was something...

She rose from his former table "I'm going with you."

He stopped and stared a moment. "That is, if you'll have me."

"Certainly, if your willing to come. Toque?"

"But of course me lad... I'm not very well liked here."

Marie snorted, "You can say that again."

"Toque Wilson, we know your there. Come out now!"

Does she like me? Chris had been hoping against hope that his sis could hear her. He repeated it again in his mind.

Who? She sent back.

Clarissa

Oh come on, you don't expect me to rat out a friend do you?

She won't know! Just let me...

NO!
"ugh!"

Mr. Hempridge stopped what he was doing to look at Chris. "Is there something you want to add to the discussion Chris?"

"Uh, no sir, just a bad headache."

"Very well. Two X minus..."

That hurt sis.

Sorry... I just...

Hey, it'll be ok. Try not to read to many people's thoughts, it's not polite.
She grinned. He was only a class over but he could have just as easily been on the other side of the school. Her powers had grown.

Their teacher droned on and on and Molly was beginning to wish it would all end. From the corner of her eye she caught it just as it happened.

A kid flicked a tack hard. It bounced off the clock and stabbed a young girl in the face across from him. He laughed out loud. He soon wasn't laughing as he was lifted bodily in the air by some invisible force. He hit the wall hard and landed unconscious.

The room froze. The teacher was staring wide eyed at the young girl. She looked around frantically and then looked at her desk. After a moment to compose herself the teacher sent her down to the office. The teacher's aide took over as she accompanied her young student.

Brother!

What is it, what's wrong?
She related what had happened

Don't worry. They won't find you out. And who knows what will happen to her? We may see her tomorrow.

Molly and Chris never saw her again.

Reboot; Vince Vaan part 4

Vince pored over the letter. It was from his distant family. He knew what he must do.

"I ain't what I used to be. That run sure took it out of me." Toque commented.

"You can say that again." Marie said, looking down at Toque's gut.

Vince materialized out of a side room. They were in his home, a quaint dwelling, small enough for just one person.

Toque slammed his fist down on the table. "I must say I thank you boy. You've shown me more hospitality than anyone I've ever seen."

"Not that it's any of our business but what's in the letter?" Marie nodded at it.

"It's from my family... I must go." Was all he said

Toque nodded several times. "So your related to old Tarvish? Shoulda known, you got his build.

"All right lad I'll come with you. I need to collect after all."

"This a long visit I take it?" Marie asked.

"It is. I'm selling my home."

Ten years ago

It had happened all of a sudden one night.

He had an idea of how to prank his sister. She had been especially moody lately and he thought he would relieve the tension between them.

She was outside sunbathing as he filled a bucket of water. She had acted weird around him, giving him dirty looks and generally being a pile to him. This was the perfect time for vengeance.

Slowly, quietly he made his way to her. Snickering, he made it within throwing distance. He would remember her scream and enjoy it for some time to come. When he did throw the water, however, her scream was the last thing he remembered.

"Aaaah!"

With the force of a linebacker he was tossed backward through the air. He hit the ground and rolled a few feet before he finally came to a halt.

"Chris!" She said frantically. She got up and came running. He got up slowly and inspected himself.

"I'm ok..." Then it hit him, and he looked at her. "Molly... your a psychic?"

She looked away, putting her hands behind her back. "We have to tell mom and dad."

"No!" She screamed. "Promise me you won't tell them."

"Molly, you may not grow up right if -"

"Promise me brother! You know what they do to psychics..."

Chris squirmed at the thought. He gazed long at his sister. "... all right sis, I promise."

She giggled happily and embraced him.

Chris would remember this for much of the rest of his life.

Reboot; Vince Vaan part 3

"Work stacking duties complete. Anything else you need ma'am?"

She giggled a little but shook her head. She passed the five copper coins due him. "Give the innkeeper my regards." He said before taking off.

He was tall, about as tall an any other man worth his grain. He might have been confused for an orc had his skin been green. His arms held the same strength as any of the bigger men. His sleek black hair went behind him, short as ever. He was unshaven but still garnered a few looks from the ladies - and he knew it.

"See you all tomorrow." He gestured to the waitresses. He gave a last longing look at the brew on the wall and knew it was just one more year.

After leaving the inn he looked down into his back. Four silver and five copper, not bad for a days work. He thought.

The walk home went uneventful. He passed by a few people he knew but was tired enough that he didn't bother to stop and chat. As he walked in the front door where he lived he didn't realize two pairs of eyes were viewing him.

"That must be him." Toques said.

"You sure, that big feller?" Marie said

"He matches the description." Toque said.

She was smaller than him, and more often than not got in the way. The fifth grade was starting soon. He really didn't want to have a little girl tagging along, but she liked him. She needed big brother and he was there for her through and through.

"Brother, can you sing it again? For me?"

They were home alone. Their parents had gone out briefly, for what they didn't know. They knew their condition and did what they could to avoid it. He could hear her stomach growling, even as his growled. He oblaged

The rain poured outside. All that afternoon brother and sister sat enjoying each other's company. Brother sang, she listened. It seemed like it would never end. His soft melodious voice went on through the night. "Wishing on a dream that seems far off..."

"He's over there!"

"After him!"

Toque held his breath at the side of the road. Above him he could hear the thundering of footsteps as a veritable mountain of men, and more gathering to the debtor collection, "gained" on him. He exhaled as all of them turned down the wrong path and ran headlong to collect. Toque turned to watch them go. He nearly jumped out of his skin as a hand came down on his shoulder.

"Toque Wilson, my God, I thought I'd never seen your face around here again."

She was sleek, slender. She had a form most women craved. An oval shaped face matched almond eyes and the dark brown shoulder-length hair marked her. Toque gazed on a familiar face but knew the deadliness behind it.

"Marie Ollon, so good to make your acquaintance milady." He took her hand and kissed it. "Time hasn't withered you at all."

"Spare me the pleasentries Toque. If you came back here I know for a fact that it's something big. You have more creditors in this town than hairs on your head."

"Ah, very true, very true. But, I owe others more, and I must pay my debts one way or another.

"Do you know of a Vaan? A Vince Vaan?"

"Hmm, can't say that I do." Though it does sound kind of familiar...

Toque pulled a letter out of his pocket. "With this I pay off a great debt so I agreed. I must find this Vince before nightfall."

He took another drag of his cigarrette.

So many names. Cold nicotine iced him. The sheet after sheet of dead well, they tended to blur together. He still felt remorse. He only wished he called the shots.

They're glorious leader Paxel Alejandro Meskoveiar had personal seen fit to send in the back ups. He was a military leader's son who claimed to have all the answers. With these measures in place, we cannot fail he had said. The people believed in him. They wanted something to believe in...

"Christ." He swore. He put out his cig and looked out over his bridge. New, inexperienced deckhands manned the stations. Science, ops, nav, even the helm. One would think the commanding Admiral for the theater would have something more than raw recruits working for him.

Oh well. He thought

"All right, that'll be five gold coins."

Toque Wilson scoffed at the man. "What? Why we haven't even traveled a day! I'll not pay you but three."

The driver eyed him steadily. Toque, completely unbeknown to this handed him three gold coins and 4 silver ones. "Silvers for the tip." And he winked.

The driver put the coins aside and yelled at the man. "See if I help you again Toque!"

As he pulled off in his cart he could be heard muttering. "That's the last time I trust a Wilson... or that Ronfar fellow." Toque shrugged his shoulders. "Just can't please some men. Three gold coins is more than enough for that travel.

"Right. I got to find him. Once I deliver my letter it will be done."

"Toque Wilson."

At the mention of his name Toque turned around. What could pass as a banker and a pair of thugs greeted him. "You owe me Toque. Pay up!"

"Ah yes, ha ha! I have the coins right here."

Toque reached down into the pouch at his waste.

"Quit playing games Toque, you know as well as I do what you couldn't possibly-AHH."

Toque whirled dust in their eyes from the pouch. Toque turned on his heal and made a run for it.

Evergreen part 19

Jim approached an area he was not familiar with. He had been down to see this generator when he was young but only then. The streets opened up to wide open spaces. Gun toting thugs were everywhere. This was certainly not a place he wanted to get stuck in.

Before he knew what was happening he realized that his foot was going to the floor. His breaks were letting out on him.

Crap. He thought. Just a bit further...
