"Happy eighteenth birthday Chris."
"Happy birthday myboy."
Eighteen years old. Manhood. It had come early, earlier than he had expected. Much of his youth was now behind him. He was too old to expect presents at this late date. His real present came this year however. His sister was back to her old self.
"Happy birthday brother."
To his surprise she handed him a present. Family looked to one another, knowing how close they had become in the years past.
"Well, open it." She insisted.
For the first time in years he had something to genuinely smile about. He turned his attention back to his present.
knock knock knock
"Well who in the world could that be?" Their mother asked.
Chris wouldn't ever forget that night, even as things went to hell.
"Oh my word!" Their mother exclaimed
Molly and Chris had made eye contact briefly. Wordlessly Molly slowly made her way to the back door
"No need to worry. We're here to question - STOP!"
Molly made a break for it. Their father charged them. "You aren't taking her!"
Chris watched as his world ripped apart. His father was the first, his uncle second with twin blasts. Another of the armed men restricted him. As he watched he managed to glimpse her in their yard running full on before he was knocked out.
Don't worry sis, I'll come for you. I promise.
